About this Issue

Tiny Titans #8 is a dense debut showcase within one of DC's most warmly received all-ages series, packing in the first Tiny Titans-universe appearances of Blue Devil, the Joker, Martian Manhunter, the Riddler, Clock King, Miss Persuader, Copperhead, Dreadbolt, and the Terror Titans collectively — an unusually large batch of first appearances for a single issue of a comedy book. The issue also introduces Jaime Reyes's 'Yellow and Pink Beetle' identity, a running gag born when Starfire repainted his armor to cure its 'sad' blue color, which became one of the series' most-remembered recurring bits. Set in the same Sidekick City Elementary framework that earned Tiny Titans back-to-back Eisner Awards for Best Publication for Kids in 2009 and 2011, issue #8 demonstrates how Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani were already expanding the cast well beyond the Teen Titans core and weaving in the wider DC Universe only eight issues in. The issue was later collected in the trade paperback Tiny Titans Vol. 2: Adventures in Awesomeness, ensuring its character debuts reached the book-market and library audiences that made the series a New York Times bestseller.

History

Tiny Titans launched in February 2008 under DC's Johnny DC all-ages imprint, written and drawn entirely by Art Baltazar — a Chicago-born cartoonist who had self-published since 1994 — and co-written by Franco Aureliani, a Bronx-born cartoonist. For issue #8, Baltazar served as writer, artist, colorist, and letterer, making the book an unusually singular creative product for a major publisher. The series was conceived as a kid-friendly, elementary-school riff on DC's Teen Titans universe, with each issue structured as a collection of short anthology vignettes rather than a single through-line story — a format already established by issue #8 and visible in its multiple named chapters.
