Martian Manhunter

DC · 1998–2001 · 38 issues
About the series

From 1998 to 2001, DC Comics gave the Martian Manhunter his first ongoing solo series, a 38-issue run that finally let J'onn J'onzz step out of the Justice League's shadow. Anchored by the gritty, psychological storytelling of writer John Ostrander and the moody, expressive art of Tom Mandrake—who also handled writing duties on later arcs—the series explored the alien's tragic past on Mars and his lonely, often melancholic life on Earth. With additional contributions from John Arcudi, Eduardo Barreto, and Jamal Igle, this run deepened the character's mythos, making him a compelling figure of isolation and resilience. It remains a definitive take on the Manhunter, beloved for its noir-tinged humanity and emotional depth.
