Who is Zatanna?

Zatanna Zatara is the daughter of legendary magician Giovanni 'John' Zatara, from whom she inherited both a talent for sorcery and her signature method of casting spells by speaking backwards. A powerful stage magician and genuine sorceress, she first appeared searching for her missing father.

Few characters in DC's vast mythology carry the mystique and staying power of Zatanna, the spellcasting sensation who first dazzled readers in Hawkman #4 back in 1964, conjured into existence by the legendary Silver Age team of Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson. Over an extraordinary six-decade run — 274 catalog appearances and counting — she has woven herself into the very fabric of DC storytelling, gracing the pages of Justice League of America, Detective Comics, and DC Comics: Bombshells while sharing adventures with the absolute titans of the DC Universe: Batman, Superman, and The Flash. With ten key issues to her name, collectors and fans alike have long recognized that her appearances carry real weight. Whether you're a longtime devotee or just discovering her, Zatanna is one of those rare characters whose Silver Age debut feels as electric and essential today as it ever did.

Trivia

  • Zatanna earned her Justice League membership the hard way — DC put it to a fan vote in the 1970s, and she won outright.en.wikipedia.org
  • Her reputation took a serious hit when it was revealed she had mind-wiped the Secret Society of Super-Villains and tampered with Dr. Light's mind, a storyline that ignited fierce backlash both within the comics themselves and among readers.en.wikipedia.org
  • Gerry Conway has written more of Zatanna's comics than any other writer in our catalog — 25 issues.
