Sam Kieth

Sam Kieth was an American comics artist and writer born on January 11, 1963, who passed away on March 15, 2026. He is perhaps most recognized as the creator of *The Maxx*, a surrealist series that blended psychological depth with visually inventive storytelling, and as a co-creator of Neil Gaiman's foundational *The Sandman*. He also originated *Zero Girl*, further demonstrating his interest in strange, emotionally grounded narratives.

Kieth's path into the industry took root in the mid-1980s, and over a career spanning nearly four decades — active from 1985 through 2022 across more than 240 credited issues — he worked in multiple roles: penciler, inker, colorist, and writer. His style was immediately distinctive, favoring loose, expressive linework and compositions that felt simultaneously chaotic and intimate, well-suited to the introspective, often dreamlike subject matter he gravitated toward.
