Michael Dalton Allred, born in 1962, is an American artist and writer whose idiosyncratic visual sensibility has made him one of the more distinctive voices in independent and mainstream comics alike. He is best known as the creator of Madman, the long-running series that became a touchstone of alternative superhero storytelling, and as co-creator and artist of the comic book series iZombie.
Dead Air #[nn] (1989)
Allred's path into comics led to a career spanning more than three decades, with catalog credits as artist, writer, colorist, inker, and letterer across 188 issues between 1989 and 2022. His aesthetic draws heavily from pop art and the commercial and comic illustration of the 1950s and 1960s — clean lines, bold compositions, and a retro warmth that sets his pages apart from contemporaries. Among his most prominent titles are X-Statix and X-Force for Marvel, where he brought that same irreverent visual energy to superhero ensemble work, alongside creator-owned projects like The Atomics and Red Rocket 7. He also contributed to Marvel's FF series, further demonstrating his versatility within genre conventions.
Madman Adventures #1 (1992)
Whether working on his own characters or lending his style to established properties, Allred maintains a coherent artistic identity — playful, precise, and rooted in an affection for a particular golden moment in popular visual culture.
