Mary Bierbaum
Mary Bierbaum is an American comic book writer best known as half of the husband-and-wife writing team with Tom Bierbaum. Born in the United States, she and Tom are most recognized for their extensive run on DC Comics’ *Legion of Super-Heroes*, where they took over the series in the late 1980s and helped steer the sprawling sci-fi saga through the early 1990s. Their tenure is noted for deepening the team’s interpersonal drama and political intrigue, particularly during the “Five Years Later” storyline that reimagined the Legion’s future. Over a career spanning from 1986 to 2000, Mary Bierbaum is credited as a writer on 125 issues, with her most frequent credits appearing on *Legion of Super-Heroes*, *Legionnaires*, and the short-lived humor series *The Heckler*. She also contributed to *StormQuest* and *Star*. The Bierbaums collaborated closely with artists such as Keith Giffen and Al Gordon, and their work helped define a key era for the Legion franchise. After leaving mainstream comics in the early 2000s, Mary Bierbaum stepped away from the industry, but her contributions remain a touchstone for Legion fans. She has not received major industry awards, but her work is remembered for its ambitious storytelling and character focus.
