Legion of Super-Heroes (vol. 4) #6 is a key building block of the celebrated 'Five Years Later' era — the darkest, most narratively ambitious reinvention the team had seen up to that point. It introduces two characters — Celeste Rockfish and Devlin O'Ryan — who are wholly original to this continuity and would go on to shape the run's detective-noir subplot and eventual membership roster. The issue deepens the Mordru threat that drives the Legion's early reformation arc while simultaneously expanding the Dominator-controlled EarthGov conspiracy that gave the 'Five Years Later' run its dense, morally compromised political texture. Volume 4 launched in November 1989 under the creative quartet of plotter/penciller Keith Giffen, scripters Tom and Mary Bierbaum, and co-plotter/inker Al Gordon — a collaborative writers'-room model that was virtually unprecedented at DC at the time. Giffen had conceived the radical 'Five Years Later' time-jump as a way to rescue the Legion from decades of tangled continuity, and early in the run the team was hit with an additional editorial mandate: Superboy had to be retroactively erased from Legion history entirely due to inter-office politics around the Superman titles, forcing the writers to devise fresh replacements for the character's foundational role. Issue #6 lands squarely in the opening Mordru story arc, the first major test of the reformed Legion, and debuts Celeste Rockfish — a character conceived by inker Al Gordon, inspired by the TV detective Jim Rockford and a real-life San Francisco radio personality.
