Launching DC's 1993 series with unmistakable energy, this inaugural issue of Legionnaires packs its cover with a sprawling assembly of young heroes — all sporting the Legion "L" emblem — gathered around a central figure in white-and-blue armor as a burst of lightning energy crackles between him and a red-haired Legionnaire in the foreground. From a wild-haired brawler at lower left to flyers soaring in the background, Chris Sprouse's pencils and Karl Story's inks give each character a distinct personality while still feeling like a genuine team portrait. With Tom and Mary Bierbaum scripting "Baptism by Fire!" and Sprouse already delivering a confident ensemble composition, this is a promising launch for the Legion's younger generation.
