About this Issue

Savage Dragon: Sex and Violence #1 is the true debut issue for Jennifer Murphy (later codenamed Smasher and eventually Jennifer Dragon), one of the most consequential supporting characters in the entire Savage Dragon mythos — a super-strong single mother who would go on to join the Special Operations Strikeforce, become Dragon's romantic partner, and eventually his wife. The story's willingness to center its superhero narrative on domestic violence and its aftermath represented a mature, socially grounded approach that was far from typical for mid-1990s Image Comics. It is also the first appearance of young Angel Murphy, whose own complicated trajectory through the Savage Dragon universe spans decades of storytelling.

History

The two-issue miniseries was written by Tom and Mary Bierbaum — the husband-and-wife team best known for their run on DC's Legion of Super-Heroes — with story assist credited to Savage Dragon creator Erik Larsen. Art duties were shared across Adam Hughes, Mark Lipka, and Rick Mays, with Mays also providing the cover. The issue's back-matter sketchbook section documents the development of the miniseries itself. The title was published cover-dated August 1997 under the Image Comics imprint.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First full appearance of Jennifer Murphy (Smasher / later Jennifer Dragon), a super-strong, near-invulnerable mutant who becomes a major recurring character across hundreds of subsequent Savage Dragon issues.
  • First appearance of Angel Murphy (later Angel Darling / Battle Girl), Jennifer's infant daughter who grows into a significant character in her own right later in the series.
  • First appearances of antagonists Guillotine (an armored, laser-armed killer) and Grundy (an informant who attempts to frame Jennifer for a series of decapitation murders).
  • Written by Tom and Mary Bierbaum (Legion of Super-Heroes fame) with story assist from Erik Larsen; art by Adam Hughes, Mark Lipka, and Rick Mays; cover by Rick Mays.
  • Published August 1997 by Image Comics as the first issue of a 2-issue miniseries; the story arc concludes in the September 1997 issue #2.
  • The central plot — Dragon responding to a domestic violence call and defending Jennifer against a wrongful murder charge — gave the Savage Dragon universe an unusually grounded, socially aware storyline for a superhero title of that era.
  • Jennifer Murphy subsequently joined the government-sponsored Special Operations Strikeforce (S.O.S.) under the codename Smasher, eventually becoming one of the Savage Dragon's most enduring love interests and, in certain continuity threads, his wife.
  • The issue's back-matter includes a sketchbook section that documents the development of the miniseries, including an early Erik Larsen sketch from Savage Dragon #4.
