Legion of Super-Heroes #15
The early-1991 run of Legion of Super-Heroes was delivering some of the most ambitious storytelling in DC's lineup, and issue #15 makes that case vividly right on its cover. Keith Giffen and Al Gordon's cover art plunges us into a chaotic battlefield scene: a green-skinned Legionnaire — wounded and bloodied — struggles forward amid explosions and crackling lightning bolts, flanked by teammates fighting through the mayhem while a fleet of massive spherical warships looms ominously through a smoke-choked pink sky above. With the Bierbaums and Giffen driving the story inside, and art by Brandon Peterson inked by Carlos Garzón and Al Gordon, this is a team firing on all cylinders.
