Legion of Super-Heroes #30

The Legion Subs take things underground in this June 1992 issue, and the cover by Jason Pearson and Karl Story makes clear they've walked straight into trouble — armed gunmen close in from both sides of a shadowy tunnel while a burst of fire and energy illuminates a group of heroes caught in the middle of a full-on "Ambush!" The composition is tense and claustrophobic, with the attackers' weapons trained on silhouetted figures surrounded by flame, selling the desperation of the moment beautifully. With Keith Giffen, Tom and Mary Bierbaum, and Jason Pearson all contributing to the story, this is a strong chapter in the gritty, sophisticated run that defined the Legion in the early '90s.
