About the series
From 1982 to 1996, Fantagraphics' Love and Rockets redefined independent comics as brothers Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez wove two distinct, richly human sagas. Gilbert chronicled the sprawling, magical-realist dramas of the fictional Latin American town Palomar, centered on the formidable Luba, while Jaime followed the punk-infused lives and loves of Maggie Chascarillo and Hopey Glass in Southern California. A landmark of the alternative-comics movement, the series proved that superheroes weren't needed for groundbreaking, emotionally resonant storytelling.
