Trivia · 7 facts

  • Published December 1990 by Fantagraphics Books; cover by Gilbert Hernandez, consistent with the brothers' alternating cover duties across the series.
  • Contains installments of three concurrent serials: Jaime Hernandez's 'Wig Wam Bam' (Part 2 of that arc's chapter in this issue) featuring Maggie, Maya, Danita Lincoln, and Ray Dominguez; Gilbert Hernandez's 'Poison River' (his epic tracing Luba's pre-Palomar backstory, her teenage marriage to gangster Peter Rio, and the introduction of characters like Gorgo); and Gilbert's 'Love and Rockets X,' an Altmanesque L.A. ensemble piece.
  • 'Poison River,' running through this issue, has been described by Fantagraphics as tracing 'the pre-Palomar childhood of Luba, her teenage marriage to gangster Peter Rio, the secrets behind her mysterious mother' — widely regarded as one of Gilbert Hernandez's masterworks.
  • 'Wig Wam Bam,' which begins its serialization in #33 and continues through #34, is documented by Wikipedia as the longest single Locas story at 120 pages, eventually collected as The Complete Love & Rockets Vol. 11 (1994).
  • According to one contemporary issue-by-issue review (The Stop Button), Jaime's chapter in #34 addresses the Maggie-and-Hopey romantic relationship with unusual directness and explicitly engages with anti-Latino racism experienced by Maggie — thematic territory the Locas stories had not foregrounded as directly before.
  • The Poison River and Love and Rockets X material serialized through this issue was later collected in The Complete Love & Rockets Vol. 12 – Poison River (1994) and as part of the Love and Rockets Library Vol. 6: Beyond Palomar (2007); the Locas material appeared in Complete L&R Vol. 11: Wigwam Bam (1994) and Library Vol. 5: Perla la Loca.
  • The entire first-volume run including this issue was reissued in a fifteen-volume paperback graphic novel series and again in a seven-volume mass-market paperback series released by Fantagraphics in 2022.
