“Poison River [Chapter 1]”

In "Poison River [Chapter 1]," Gilbert Hernandez crafts a tense, emotionally charged chapter as family secrets erupt in a storm of betrayal and displacement. When El Señor discovers that baby Luba isn't his, he casts Maria and the child out, forcing Karlota to intervene and set off a chain of upheavals that fractures lives and upends the fragile stability of the community. With Hernandez’s distinctive storytelling and expressive art on full display, this issue lays the groundwork for a story where survival and loyalty are tested in the shadow of personal and societal decay. Karlota saves baby Luba from being harmed by Maria's husband El Señor who kicks her and Maria out of his mansion because he realizes Luba is not his child. With no family or place to go, Maria stays at Eduardo's place. Juan, Eduardo's ex-coworker, hits him in the head with a club, takes his money and leaves town. Eduardo's head injury causes him to start drinking and miss work. Eventually, Maria leaves town and then later Karlota. All alone, Eduardo leaves with Luba in tow.
