“Bread, Love and Maria”

Gilbert Hernandez's cover for Love and Rockets #45 captures a beauty-pageant moment in full swing — a radiant "Miss Luminosa 1948" wearing her crown, sash, and number 32, bouquet in hand, waving to the crowd while a suited emcee holds his microphone nearby. Flanking her are four runners-up in colorful swimwear, and a giant stylized face beams down from the upper right like a surreal moon over the festivities. It's a warm, witty snapshot of mid-century spectacle rendered in Hernandez's confident, expressive line work, setting the stage for "Bread, Love and Maria" inside.
