Love and Rockets #40
In "Chester Square," Beto crafts a quiet yet resonant chapter in the Love and Rockets saga, following Luba, Hilda, and Ofelia as they navigate life in a rural commune and the shifting tides of displacement. After leaving the village of Isleta due to rising military tension, the women find themselves in a series of transient towns before finally settling in the isolated, phoneless community of Palomar. With Beto handling every aspect of the interior art and storytelling, the issue pulses with emotional depth and subtle observation. The cover, a striking piece by Gilbert Hernandez, captures the story’s grounded, intimate tone.

Luba, Hilda and Ofelia are living with a group of hippies in a village commune outside Isleta, led by Sebastian and Antonino. Sebastian successfully tends to Ofelia's serious back pain not due to his supposed healing skills but thanks to pills. Luba connects with Antonino, a muscular laborer, which later results in her second child, Maricela being born. Encroaching military violence forces them to leave abruptly. They settle down in one town where Luba works as a bañadora, then another town. Finally they settle on a small town with no telephone or television named Palomar.
