Love and Rockets #30
In "Ninety-Three Million Miles from the Sun ... and Counting," Gilbert Hernandez crafts a haunting, grounded narrative following Eduardo’s desperate journey from the city to Isleta, where he finds fleeting refuge with Hilda and Ofelia. Over a year later, his quiet departure with a shovel hints at a life still searching, ending in a tragic death on a distant beach. The story unfolds with quiet intensity, tracing the fragile threads of survival and memory, as Ofelia, Ruben, and Gina flee with baby Luba—only to face violence and betrayal that leave her buried alive, her survival a fragile, unspoken defiance. The issue’s stark emotional weight is matched by the Hernandez brothers’ distinctive art, with Jaime’s cover capturing the story’s melancholic, intimate scale.

Destitute, Eduardo begs for money in the big city, walking many miles while carrying Luba until reaching Hilda and Ofelia's place in Isleta. Over a year later, feeling haunted by Maria, he leaves, shovel in hand, presumably to find better work. He's found dead on a beach, possibly murdered. Ofelia, Ruben and Gina head out of town with baby Luba. Ofelia gets off the car to take care of Luba's soiled diapers, then hears gunshots. Attacked by unknown assailants for their leftism, Ofelia's friends are brutally raped and murdered, while she is shot multiples times and buried alive. She survives.
