Peter Alan Laird was born on January 27, 1954, in the United States. He is best known as the co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a property he developed alongside Kevin Eastman. Laird’s path into comics began with a shared love of independent and underground comix, which led him and Eastman to self-publish the first *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles* comic in 1984. As the series grew, Laird became its primary writer and artist, shaping the tone and mythology of the Turtles’ world. His signature style blended gritty, black-and-white linework with a darkly humorous, action-packed sensibility. Over the decades, he worked on numerous TMNT titles, including *Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles* and *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures*, and contributed as a colorist, inker, and letterer across hundreds of issues. Laird’s key collaborator was Eastman, with whom he co-created the core characters and their supporting cast. Later in life, he stepped back from active comics work but remained a steward of the franchise through his ownership stake. He received multiple industry awards for his contributions, including the Eisner Award. Laird’s legacy is that of a foundational architect of one of pop culture’s most enduring independent comic creations.
