Who is Peter Quill?

The half-human, half-Spartoi son of Earth woman Meredith Quill and alien emperor J'son of Spartax, Peter Quill was raised on Earth before fleeing to space, where he claimed the title Star-Lord and armed himself with the Element Gun to forge a life as a cosmic adventurer.

Half a century of cosmic adventure begins with Peter Quill's Bronze Age debut in Marvel Preview #4 (1976), brought to life by Bernie Wrightson in one of Marvel's most enduring origin stories. Over nearly fifty years of publication, this Star-Lord has grown from a cult favorite into one of Marvel's most recognizable cosmic figures, racking up 191 catalog appearances across landmark titles like Guardians of the Galaxy, Legendary Star-Lord, and Annihilation: Conquest. Four of those appearances carry key-issue status β€” the kind of collector significance that marks a character's place in comics history. He shares the Marvel cosmos with an unforgettable roster including Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, and Drax the Destroyer, making his corner of the universe one of the richest and most beloved in the Bronze Age and beyond.

Trivia

  • Peter Quill's 1970s Bronze Age debut was later treated as existing outside Earth-616 continuity, with Marvel handbooks and editorial commentary effectively distinguishing that original Star-Lord from the modern Guardians-era incarnation.marvel.fandom.com
  • The modern Peter Quill was effectively reintroduced through Annihilation as a largely different take that explicitly referenced him having once been called Star-Lord, helping bridge a character who had been forgotten for years back into mainstream Marvel cosmic storytelling.marvel.fandom.com
  • Dan Abnett has written more of Peter Quill's comics than any other writer in our catalog β€” 25 issues.
