Annihilation: Conquest - Wraith #1
Annihilation: Conquest – Wraith #1 (cover-dated September 2007, on sale July 11, 2007) delivers the first full appearance of Zak-Del, the Kree exile who calls himself Wraith — one of the most distinctive new characters introduced during Marvel's celebrated mid-2000s cosmic renaissance. The issue transplants classic Western gunslinger mythology into deep space, giving the Annihilation: Conquest event its darkest and most self-contained protagonist, a figure driven purely by personal vengeance rather than galactic duty. Wraith's Exolon-symbiote powerset, which renders him immune to Phalanx assimilation, gave writers a thematic and tactical wildcard that proved essential to the climax of the main Conquest series — and Donny Cates later wove the Exolon into his Knull/symbiote mythology, retroactively deepening Wraith's significance across the Marvel Universe. The issue also marks the debut of Ra-Venn, leader of the Kree resistance front, alongside the first appearance of the Polymorphic Weapon, Wraith's signature shape-changing talisman of the Ancient Kree.
"Wraith Chapter 1" introduces a relentless, enigmatic warrior in the midst of the Annihilation: Conquest sweep, as the Phalanx face an unexpected foe whose powers resist their adaptation. Written by Javier Grillo-Marxuach and brought to life with sharp, dynamic art by Kyle Hotz, this issue sets a tense, high-stakes tone as Wraith battles through Kree space, seeking answers in the ruins of Haroun. Cover by Clint Langley captures the grim intensity of a man on a mission, with the Phalanx closing in and a captured Wraith facing Ronan’s cold interrogation.

Editor Bill Rosemann approached television writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach — then coming off supervising-producer credits on Lost and Medium — with the name 'Wraith' and a broad concept, asking him to build a brand-new cosmic character from the ground up for the Annihilation: Conquest event. Grillo-Marxuach, who had already written the Annihilation: Super-Skrull mini-series for the preceding Annihilation wave, consciously modeled Wraith on the archetype of the Western stranger who rides into town with skills the townspeople desperately need but who has no interest in their war — describing the character internally as 'the Kree With No Name,' a deliberate riff on Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name. Artist Kyle Hotz handled both pencils and inks, with Clint Langley providing the painted covers across all four issues; the series was announced at New York Comic Con in February 2007 alongside the other Conquest tie-in mini-series.
