About this Issue

Life with Archie #16 marks the first same-sex wedding depicted in a mainstream Archie Comics title, showing Kevin Keller — Archie's first openly gay character — marrying Dr. Clay Walker across both of the series' parallel adult timelines simultaneously. The issue also serves as the adult debut of Kevin Keller in the 'Married Life' era and the first appearance of Clay Walker, who would become a central figure in the broader social and political arc that ultimately leads to Archie Andrews' own death saving Kevin's life. Its cultural significance extends beyond Riverdale: Archie Comics placed a gay interracial military wedding at the center of one of its most widely read titles of the era, at a moment when same-sex marriage was still a national flashpoint, demonstrating that superhero and humor publishers were not the only comics companies willing to engage directly with LGBTQ+ representation.

In "Progress's Price Part Four: For Better or for Worse!", Archie's world spins with quiet tension as old friendships and new tensions come to a head. Kevin and Clay share the heartfelt story of their meeting, while Archie grapples with his role as a teacher, Reggie digs deeper into Veronica's disappearance, and Fred reluctantly brings Ethel on board—just as everyone gathers at the Choklit Shop for the long-awaited wedding. Written by Paul Kupperberg and illustrated by Pat Kennedy, Tim Kennedy, and Bob Smith, with colors by Glenn Whitmore and letters by Jack Morelli, this emotionally grounded chapter unfolds under Fernando Ruiz’s evocative cover.

History

The 'Life with Archie: The Married Life' revival was conceived by Michael Uslan and scripted from its first issue by Paul Kupperberg, who wrote #16 as part of an ongoing soap-opera format presenting two parallel futures — one where Archie married Veronica, one where he married Betty — across each magazine-format issue. Penciling duties on #16 were split between Fernando Ruiz and Pat and Tim Kennedy, with inking by Al Milgrom and Bob Smith, coloring by Glenn Whitmore, lettering by Jack Morelli, and editing overseen by Victor Gorelick. The wedding arc had been publicly teased well in advance; Archie Comics announced Kevin's military backstory and his meeting with Clay in late 2011, building press momentum that culminated in the issue selling out at retail. A boycott campaign organized by the conservative advocacy group One Million Moms, which pressured retailers such as Toys 'R' Us to pull the issue, was widely credited by observers with amplifying rather than suppressing reader interest.

  • Kevin Keller — created by Dan Parent and first introduced in Veronica #202 (September 2010) as Archie Comics' first openly gay character — is the narrative thread connecting this issue to the series' climax in #36, where Archie dies taking a bullet meant for Kevin, by then a newly elected U.S. Senator.
  • The Kevin Keller ongoing solo series earned a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book in 2013, reflecting the broader cultural recognition of the character arc that this issue helped advance.
