John Ney Rieber
John Ney Rieber is an American comic book writer, born in 1960, best known for his work on *The Books of Magic* and *Captain America*. He entered the industry in the early 1990s, contributing to DC Comics' mature-readers line with a thoughtful, often melancholic style that emphasized character interiority over spectacle. His most acclaimed run was on *The Books of Magic* (1994–1999), where he expanded Neil Gaiman’s original miniseries into a ongoing series, exploring the magical education of young Timothy Hunter. Rieber’s writing often blended fantasy with psychological depth, and he collaborated frequently with artists like Peter Gross and Gary Amaro. He co-created the miniseries *Shadows Fall* with artist John Van Fleet, and later wrote *Sandman Mystery Theatre: Sleep of Reason* and *G.I. Joe Reloaded*. His work on *Captain America* (2002–2003) offered a more introspective take on the character. Rieber also wrote *Tomb Raider: The Series* for Top Cow. After a period of reduced output, he returned with the graphic novel *The Books of Magic: The Life and Times of Timothy Hunter* in 2021. He has not received major industry awards but remains respected for his literate, character-driven storytelling in the fantasy and superhero genres.
