Michael Wm. Kaluta's cover for this 1997 Vertigo issue is genuinely haunting — a dark-haired girl at its center, her hair spreading outward like roots, while small fairy-like figures cling to and crawl along twisted, gnarled branches that surround her. The image perfectly captures the eerie, otherworldly tone that made The Books of Magic such a distinctive corner of the DC/Vertigo universe. John Ney Rieber and Peter Snejbjerg bring their collaboration to its eighth chapter of "Rites of Passage," and if this cover is any indication, the story remains deeply steeped in folklore and quiet dread.
