“Act Two: Toys for the Play of Ghosts”

In "Act Two: Toys for the Play of Ghosts," Warren is haunted by visions tied to the Shadow, while Shen presses him for answers. As the Shadow claims another victim, Cruz, Warren is plunged into haunting dreams of Cruz’s life—dreams that blur the line between memory and nightmare. The story unfolds as Shen and Warren confront the past, uncovering the painful truth behind the Shadow’s origin and the accidental death of a young girl named Alice. Written by John Ney Rieber and illustrated by John Van Fleet—whose distinctive art defines the issue’s moody, atmospheric tone—this issue deepens the mystery with a haunting exploration of guilt and the past’s lingering grip. The cover, also by Van Fleet, captures the tension with a stark, shadowed figure looming over a quiet cityscape.

Shen confronts Warren about the dreams he has that are brought on by the Shadow. At the same time the Shadow takes its next victim, Cruz, and then that night fills Warren's dreams with Cruz's life. Shen and Warren meet again the following day and head to Shen's home to discuss Warren's dreams and his past. It's this past and the inadvertent death of a little girl, Alice, that lead to the creation of the Shadow when Warren can't deal with the guilt he feels due to his involvement in Alice's death.
