Teen Angst: A Treasury of '50s Romance #[nn] (1990)
Jim Balent is an American comics artist, writer, and publisher born in Pennsylvania, best known for his six-year tenure on DC Comics' *Catwoman* series from 1993 to 1999. His work on that title helped define the character's visual identity throughout much of the 1990s and remains his most widely recognized contribution to mainstream comics.
From the Darkness #[nn] (1991)
Balent broke into the industry through DC, where he also contributed work to *Batman* titles — including issues tied to the *Knightfall* storyline — and drew the anarchic *Lobo*. He additionally worked with the independent publisher Chaos! Comics, illustrating issues of *Purgatori: The Vampires Myth*.
Green Lantern: Mosaic #9 (1993)
After departing DC, Balent shifted toward creator-owned publishing. He launched *Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose*, which he has written and drawn himself, beginning around the turn of the millennium and continuing into the 2020s. The series, self-published through his own imprint, represents an unusually sustained independent venture, with Balent maintaining creative control across more than two decades of output.
Dark Horse Presents #71 (1993)
With credits spanning over 200 issues between 1990 and 2025, his career reflects both a recognizable mainstream phase and a long, prolific independent chapter. No major industry awards are on record in the available sources.
