About this Issue

Robin Annual #2 is the debut issue of Razorsharp (Raelene Sharp) and the entire Psyba-Rats crew — Hackrat, Channel, and Mega-Biter — making it the ground-zero first appearance for a small constellation of characters who would go on to anchor their own 1995 three-issue limited series. As part of DC's line-wide 1993 Bloodlines crossover, every participating annual introduced a metagene-activated 'New Blood' hero, and this issue fulfilled that mandate by dramatizing how the alien parasite Venev's attack on Gotham data-pirates triggered Razorsharp's blade-morphing powers and Channel's ability to inhabit television systems. The moral crux of the story — Razorsharp choosing to save Robin rather than murder the Collector — gave Tim Drake's solo corner of the Bat-universe its first recurring gray-area ally, a theme Chuck Dixon would continue to develop when the Psyba-Rats returned as occasional foils and partners throughout the Robin ongoing. The issue was later collected in the Robin: Solo trade paperback, cementing its place in the canonical early run of Tim Drake's first ongoing series.

History

Writer Chuck Dixon and penciler Kieron Dwyer created the Psyba-Rats and Razorsharp specifically for this annual, with inking duties shared among an unusually large team: José Luis García-López, Carlos Pedrazzini, and Frank McLaughlin. The cover was provided by Jim Balent and Scott Hanna. Editors Dennis O'Neil and Jordan B. Gorfinkel oversaw the issue, which carried a cover date of August 1993 and fell within the 'Earthplague' chapter of the Bloodlines crossover — DC's third consecutive summer-annuals event, following Armageddon 2001 and Eclipso: The Darkness Within. Bloodlines ran through 25 annuals in total, with each chapter tasked with launching a new character; Robin Annual #2 delivered on that mandate while simultaneously serving as an early standalone adventure for Tim Drake's brand-new ongoing series, which had launched only months before.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Razorsharp (Raelene Sharp), a metagene-activated hacker whose Bloodlines-granted power lets her transform her arms and legs into razor-thin blades capable of cutting through nearly any material.
  • First appearance of the full Psyba-Rats team: Razorsharp, Hackrat (Reginald Hackman), Channel (Carter Channel), and Mega-Biter (Michael Wasco/Wasko) — a crew of Gotham data-pirates who debut as antagonists before pivoting into recurring anti-hero allies of Robin.
  • First appearance of the Collector, a shadowy information-broker and recurring arch-enemy of the Psyba-Rats, who engineers the deaths of Mega-Biter and (in some accounts) Output/Cullen Thrane during this issue.
  • The story is titled 'Looking Sharp' and was written by Chuck Dixon with pencils by Kieron Dwyer and inks by José Luis García-López, Carlos Pedrazzini, and Frank McLaughlin; Jim Balent and Scott Hanna provided the cover.
  • Part of DC's 1993 Bloodlines crossover ('Earthplague' chapter), a line-wide summer-annuals event spanning 25 titles in which each issue introduced a new 'New Blood' superhero whose dormant metagene was activated by one of seven alien parasites; the parasite featured here is Venev.
  • Razorsharp went on to co-headline the 1995 three-issue Psyba-Rats limited series (also written by Chuck Dixon) and later became a founding member of the Blood Pack, the superhero team spun directly out of the Bloodlines event.
  • The issue is reprinted in the Robin: Solo trade paperback (2015), which collects Robin (1993) #1–6 and Annual #1–2 alongside Showcase '94 #5–6 and #11–12.
  • Bloodlines was only the third DC event to run through its summer annuals (after Armageddon 2001 and Eclipso: The Darkness Within), and Robin Annual #2 was produced concurrently with the Knightfall/Knightquest era, meaning Bruce Wayne was broken and absent while Tim Drake was operating as Robin under Jean-Paul Valley's shadow as Batman.
