Howie Post
1926–2010 · Comics debut 1945
Howard Post was born on November 2, 1926, and built a career that spanned animation, newspaper strips, and comic books across several decades. He passed away on May 21, 2010.
Post broke into the industry in the mid-1940s, accumulating credits as artist, inker, letterer, and writer on more than 200 issues over a career stretching from 1945 well into the 2000s. Much of his comic book work landed in the humor and children's vein — titles such as *Hot Stuff the Little Devil*, *Devil Kids Starring Hot Stuff*, *Spooky*, *Heathcliff*, and *Care Bears* reflect his comfort with light, broadly appealing material suited to younger readers.
He is perhaps best remembered in two distinct arenas: his syndicated newspaper strip *The Dropouts*, which ran for thirteen years, and his work for DC Comics, where he created *Anthro*, a prehistoric coming-of-age adventure that stands as one of the more unusual concepts to emerge from DC's late-1960s experimental period.
Post's draftsmanship leaned toward the loose and expressive, well-matched to comedic and all-ages storytelling. Though he never collected major industry awards, his *Anthro* creation has earned lasting recognition among fans of offbeat Silver Age comics, and his newspaper strip demonstrated a staying power that few syndicated features achieve.
