George Wildman was an American cartoonist born on July 31, 1927, who spent the better part of his career as one of the more quietly prolific figures in mid-century comic books. He died on May 22, 2016.

Wildman's longest and most consequential association was with Charlton Comics, where he served as a top editor from 1971 to 1985. Alongside his editorial duties, he became the defining regular artist on Charlton's Popeye comic books, a title that would remain central to his reputation throughout his life. His credits across the industry span an impressive range — artist, inker, letterer, and writer — appearing on some 229 issues between 1954 and 2023, a span that reflects both his versatility and his durability. Beyond Popeye and its international editions such as Popeye Le Marin and Cap'tain présente Popeye, his work appeared on titles including Timmy the Timid Ghost and Atomic Mouse, mainstays of Charlton's humor and all-ages output.

Wildman never courted the spotlight the way artists on superhero titles often did, but his steady, warm cartooning gave Popeye a consistent visual identity across decades. His legacy rests largely in that sustained commitment — making a beloved character feel reliably, reassuringly himself for generations of young readers.
