Barbara Kesel
Barbara Randall Kesel, born October 2, 1960, is an American comic book writer and editor whose career spans more than three decades and touches virtually every major publisher in the industry. She broke into the field in the late 1980s, building credits across DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Image Comics, IDW Publishing, and Crossgen, demonstrating a versatility that kept her working steadily from 1987 through at least 2023.
Her most concentrated body of work emerged during her years at Crossgen, where she contributed substantially to titles including *Meridian*, *The First*, *Sigil*, and *Solus* — interconnected series that defined the publisher's ambitious shared-universe approach to fantasy and science fiction storytelling. Her earlier DC work included *Spelljammer*, and she also contributed to *Savant Garde* during her Image period.
Beyond writing, Kesel has worked as both an editor and inker, giving her an unusually broad technical understanding of the craft and production side of comics. That editorial sensibility arguably shapes her writing — her narratives tend to be tightly structured with a strong sense of character motivation.
No major industry awards are documented in the available record, but Kesel's longevity and the range of publishers she has served speak to a sustained professional reputation built on reliability and craft rather than flash.
