Alexander Anthony Blum was born on February 7, 1889, in Hungary, and went on to become one of the more quietly prolific figures in mid-century American comics. He died in September 1969. Though the details of his early path into the field remain sparse, Blum established himself as a working artist during the 1940s and built a substantial body of work across more than 170 credited appearances as artist, colorist, and inker — a range of roles that speaks to the practical, craft-driven nature of his career.

He is best remembered for his sustained involvement with Classics Illustrated, the long-running series that adapted literary works for young readers, where his contributions stretched across the 1940s and 1950s. His work also appeared in Jumbo Comics and Hit Comics, among other titles. The international reach of his output is reflected in the fact that his art was published in foreign editions of the Classics Illustrated franchise, including the German-language Illustrierte Klassiker and the Danish Illustrerede Klassikere, suggesting his illustrations were considered reliable and adaptable across markets.

Blum represents a generation of workhorse comic artists whose careful, representational draftsmanship made series like Classics Illustrated both accessible and durable. No major awards are documented, but the sheer breadth of his credited work points to a career defined by dependability and range.
