Rom: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus #3

History

The original Rom: Spaceknight series debuted in December 1979, written by Bill Mantlo with art by Sal Buscema; it was based on a Parker Brothers toy co-created by Scott Dankman, Richard C. Levy, and Bryan L. McCoy that ultimately sold poorly in stores. When the series concluded in February 1986, the rights to Rom's name and armored likeness reverted to Parker Brothers — later absorbed into Hasbro — leaving Marvel unable to reprint any issue in which he prominently appeared; even earlier Essential and trade-paperback collections either omitted his appearances outright or, in the case of Incredible Hulk #296, replaced his role with a text summary on Marvel Unlimited. In May 2023, Marvel negotiated a new licensing arrangement with Hasbro that cleared the path for this three-omnibus program, completing its run with the November 2024 publication of Volume 3, which was assembled with editorial oversight from Jeff Youngquist and features cover art by P. Craig Russell, with a variant cover by Bill Sienkiewicz.
