“Space-Race!”

In "Space-Race!", Forge takes a bold stand against government oversight by launching a massive neutralizer into orbit—powered by Rom’s own energy—to cleanse Earth of the Dire Wraiths once and for all. As the project nears completion, a shuttle crew delivering critical parts arrives, only to reveal they’ve been taken over by the very invaders they’re meant to help defeat. Written by Bill Mantlo and illustrated with sharp precision by Steve Ditko, with inks by Brett Breeding, colors by Petra Scotese, and letters by Janice Chiang, this 1985 Marvel issue sees Rom’s power tested in the ultimate high-stakes arena—space. The cover, by Paul Neary with inks by Breeding, captures the tension perfectly.

Not trusting the government (and specifically Gyrich) to put his weapons to good (read: ethical) use, Forge agrees to build one giant neutralizer in space which will be powered by Rom's neutralizer and banish all Dire Wraiths from Earth. As the weapon nears completion, a shuttle crew delivering parts who have been possessed by Wraiths arrive to monkey up the works.
