“The Beginning of the End of the World!”

In "The Beginning of the End of the World!", Rom faces an otherworldly threat when a mysterious black disc pierces the sun, unleashing a spreading shadow across the solar disk. Written by Bill Mantlo and illustrated with striking precision by Steve Ditko, this 1984 Marvel issue reveals the Dire Wraiths' desperate plan to merge their world with Earth through a cosmic conduit. With the help of Cindy, a girl touched by a dying Wraith, Rom races to stop the invasion—only to find that the one man who could replicate his neutralizer refuses to act. The cover, by David Mazzucchelli and Terry Austin, captures the ominous arrival of the disc with chilling clarity.

A strange black disc appears in the sky and stabs a beam directly through the sun. Rom investigates and finds it has been created by Dire Wraith sorcerers. Rom drives off the Wraiths but the damage has already been done as a large black spot is slowly spreading across the sun. Rom learns from Cindy, a little girl whose mind has been touched by a dying Wraith, that the aliens are using the black beam as a conduit with which they are attracting their own world to merge with Earth. Gyrich claims that the only man capable of duplicating Rom's neutralizer and halting Wraith-World refuses to help.
