Steven Hughes

Steven Jay Hughes was born on February 12, 1954, and died on February 18, 2000. An American artist, he is best known for his foundational work at Chaos! Comics, where he helped define the visual identity of the company’s most popular characters. Hughes provided the art for many of the publisher’s key titles, including *Lady Death*, *Evil Ernie*, and the short-lived superhero series *Detonator*. His style was instrumental in shaping the signature look of these characters, giving them a dark, dynamic, and highly detailed aesthetic that became synonymous with the Chaos! brand. Over his career, he was credited as artist and inker on more than sixty issues, with his most frequent contributions appearing across the *Lady Death* and *Evil Ernie* series. Hughes collaborated closely with writer Brian Pulido, co-creating the iconic visual designs that drove the company's success in the 1990s. Though his career was cut short by his death in 2000, his work remains a touchstone for fans of horror-tinged, antihero-driven comics.
