Peter Kuper
1958–
Peter Kuper was born on September 22, 1958, in the United States. He emerged as a distinctive voice in alternative comics, known for blending autobiographical storytelling with sharp political and social commentary. In 1979, he co-founded the influential political anthology *World War 3 Illustrated* alongside Seth Tobocman, a project that would anchor his early career. Kuper gained his widest recognition in 1997 when he took over *Mad* magazine's long-running "Spy vs. Spy" feature, writing and drawing the wordless strip for 25 years until 2022. His graphic novel work includes acclaimed adaptations of Franz Kafka's *Give It Up!* and *The Metamorphosis*, both of which earned awards and have been translated into numerous languages. Kuper's style is characterized by expressive, often grotesque linework and a keen eye for visual metaphor, whether in his own creations or his contributions to *Heavy Metal Magazine* and *Bleeding Heart*. Over a career spanning from 1980 into the 2020s, he has been credited on more than 80 issues across multiple titles. Kuper's legacy lies in his sustained commitment to comics as a medium for political dissent and personal reflection, influencing generations of alternative cartoonists.
