Animal Man #78

Peter Kuper's cover for this December 1994 Vertigo entry is a striking piece of visual unease — a shattered, crosshair-like target rendered in deep reds and browns, its center marked by a small skull emblem, the whole composition layered over fragmented newspaper text about wildlife, Amazon destruction, and global warming. The collage aesthetic feels deliberately unsettling, turning environmental headlines into a kind of bulls-eye. Jamie Delano and Steve Pugh's run on Animal Man was never shy about real-world stakes, and this issue — "Scarlet Fever" — suggests that tension is very much alive here.
