Juan José Ryp

Born Juan José Rodríguez y Prieto in Spain in 1971, Juan José Ryp built his early experience in his country's underground comics scene before crossing over to American publishers. He has since contributed work to Avatar Press, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and Image Comics across a career spanning more than two decades.

Ryp has earned consistent critical recognition for his densely layered pencil work — drawings distinguished by intricate detail, convincing anatomy, and carefully rendered environments that ground even the most extreme action in a sense of physical reality. That combination of hyperrealism and kineticism made him a natural fit for writer Warren Ellis, and their two dark superhero collaborations for Avatar Press, *Black Summer* and *No Hero*, remain among the most discussed work either creator has produced. He also tackled *Frank Miller's RoboCop*, bringing Miller's unfilmed script for *RoboCop 2* to the page alongside writer Steven Grant. A different register entirely, *Britannia* — a horror mystery set during the reign of Nero, co-created with writer Peter Milligan — demonstrated his range beyond pure action material.

Among his Marvel assignments, runs on *Wolverine*, *Wolverine: The Best There Is*, and *Clone* kept him prominent within mainstream superhero publishing, while work on Valiant's *Rai* added to a catalog that, per industry credits, encompasses roughly 168 issues between 2002 and 2026.
