About this Issue

Issue #3 delivers the dramatic pivot of the entire miniseries: Logan voluntarily asks Louise to turn him into a vampire so he can survive the underwater assault by the Aqueos and press the fight forward — a rare, deliberate surrender of his humanity in service of a mission. The moment crystallizes the series' central theme of weaponizing monstrousness against itself, extending a tradition of Wolverine vampire-war storytelling that traces back through Benjamin Percy's Wolverine (2020) run. As the penultimate chapter of a four-issue Blood Hunt tie-in, it also marks the point at which the renegade Siren Sect's scheme — using Maverick to bait and capture Logan — snaps fully into focus, setting up Alyssa's bid to crown herself vampire queen with a vampirized Wolverine as her king.

History

The miniseries was conceived as a tie-in to Marvel's summer 2024 event Blood Hunt, written by Jed MacKay, and served as the Marvel Comics debut of writer Tom Waltz — best known for co-creating *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin* at IDW. Editor Mark Basso paired Waltz with artist Juan José Ryp, who had already illustrated Logan's adventures in the concurrent *Wolverine* ongoing series under Percy, giving the book visual continuity with its parent title. Waltz has stated in interviews that he did a deep research dive into Percy's *Wolverine* run before plotting, and was specifically drawn to Percy and Viktor Bogdanović's character Louise of the Nightguard as a co-lead for the story.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Released July 10, 2024 (cover-dated September 2024); issue #3 of a four-issue limited series.
  • Written by Tom Waltz (his Marvel Comics debut), with interior art and inks by Juan José Ryp, colors by Guru-eFX, letters by VC Cory Petit, cover by Ben Harvey, and editing by Mark Basso.
  • Logan is converted into a vampire during this issue — a deliberate tactical choice — making this the issue in which he becomes a vampire within the Blood Hunt storyline.
  • Maverick (David North), already vampirized and working with the Siren Sect, appears as an antagonist who has been attempting to recruit and ultimately capture Wolverine throughout the miniseries.
  • Louise, operating as Nightguard, is a co-lead throughout; the character was originally created by Benjamin Percy and Viktor Bogdanović and first appeared in *Wolverine* #1 (2020) — her inclusion here was a deliberate creative choice by Waltz, who cited her as a highlight of Percy's run.
  • Alyssa of the Siren Sect — a vampire faction first introduced in the 2010 one-shot *The Death of Dracula* — serves as the primary antagonist across the miniseries and drives the plot in this issue.
  • The issue features the Aqueos, Marvel's aquatic vampire subspecies, as the primary combat threat, with the action set largely off the California coast and on Santa Cruz Island.
  • The series ties into the broader 2024 Blood Hunt crossover event (main series by Jed MacKay and Pepe Larraz), announced at New York Comic Con in October 2023 and positioned as a culmination of Marvel's building vampire-apocalypse narrative.
