Charles Vess was born on June 10, 1951. An American fantasy artist deeply devoted to illustrating myths and fairy tales, he is best known for his lush, detailed style that echoes the British "Golden Age" illustrator Arthur Rackham, Czech Art Nouveau painter Alphonse Mucha, and comic-strip artist Hal Foster. Vess entered comics in the early 1970s, building a career that would span over five decades. His signature work often involves delicate linework and rich color, bringing a storybook quality to the page.

He is perhaps most celebrated for his collaborations with Neil Gaiman. Their 1991 *Sandman* short story "A Midsummer Night's Dream" made history as the first comic to win the World Fantasy Award. Vess also co-created the graphic novel *Stardust* with Gaiman, which became a defining work for both. Other notable projects include *Hook*, *Rose*, and *The Book of Ballads and Sagas*. His studio, Green Man Press, is based in Abingdon, Virginia.

Vess has received multiple major honors, including the 2019 and 2023 Locus Award for Best Artist, and the 2019 Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist and Best Art Book for *The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition*. His legacy is that of a master illustrator who elevated the visual language of fantasy comics and book illustration.
