Web of Spider-Man #1
Web of Spider-Man #1 serves as the definitive narrative conclusion to the alien black costume saga that had been building across Amazing Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man since 1984 — Peter Parker finally, irrevocably severs his bond with the symbiote using the sound of church bells, a scene so resonant that Sam Raimi reconstructed it almost beat-for-beat in Spider-Man 3 (2007) and the animated series did the same. The issue also launched Marvel's third ongoing Spider-Man title, expanding the wall-crawler's publishing footprint at a moment when the character was at the commercial and creative center of the Marvel line. Its cover — a painted, near-abstract image of Spider-Man dissolving out of the black suit — set a visual tone for the series and stands as one of the more artistically adventurous single covers of the Copper Age.

The series was conceived as a direct replacement for the recently cancelled Marvel Team-Up, giving Spider-Man a third monthly solo title at a time when Amazing Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man already anchored the character's publishing line. Writer Louise Simonson (then credited as Louise Jones) was handed the launch, with penciller Greg LaRocque and inker Jim Mooney handling the interior art; editors Danny Fingeroth and James Owsley (later Christopher Priest) shepherded the book under Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter. The cover was entrusted to painter Charles Vess rather than a traditional line artist — an unusual choice that gave the debut issue an immediately distinctive look on the newsstand. The issue was released with a cover date of April 1985, though Complete Marvel Reading Order records indicate it actually shipped to shops in December 1984.

- The series replaced Marvel Team-Up as the third ongoing Spider-Man title, with Web of Spider-Man eventually running 129 issues (April 1985 – October 1995) plus ten Annuals.
- The church-bell symbiote-separation sequence was directly adapted in the animated series Spider-Man: The Animated Series (Season 1, 'The Alien Costume, Part II') and again — in live action — in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 (2007).
- The issue has been reprinted multiple times, including in Spider-Man: Birth of Venom (2007), Spider-Man: The Complete Alien Costume Saga Vol. 2 (2014/2015), True Believers: Venom Symbiosis #1 (2018), and Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 25 (2023).
- A Dynamic Forces edition signed by Louise Simonson was produced, numbered to 500 copies with a certificate of authenticity — one of the few signed variants associated with the issue.
