“The Sins of My Father!”

Charles Vess's cover for this February 1985 Marvel issue says it all: a battered Spider-Man crouches on the floor while the menacing, cape-wrapped Hobgoblin looms over him, fist raised against a roaring backdrop of flame and debris. The title "The Sins of My Father!" promises a story with real personal stakes, and the visual tension between a hero barely holding on and a villain fully in control makes this one hard to put down. Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz are at the helm inside, rounding out a creative team firing on all cylinders during one of Spider-Man's most compelling mid-'80s runs.
