Who is R2-D2?

R2-D2 is an R2-series astromech droid whose long service spans both the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War. Built for starship navigation and repair, he became a vital Rebel Alliance asset — most critically by carrying the stolen Death Star plans — and a loyal companion to the Skywalker family and Princess Leia.

Few characters have rolled, beeped, and whistled their way into comic book legend quite like R2-D2, who made his four-color debut in Marvel's Star Wars #1 back in 1977 — a Bronze Age launch that helped prove comics could carry the weight of a galaxy far, far away. Over nearly five decades of continuous publication, this plucky little astromech has racked up 322 catalog appearances across titles like Star Wars, Star Wars Weekly, and Star Wars: Darth Vader, with seven of those issues earning key-issue status among collectors. Along the way he's shared the page with an all-star roster that reads like a who's who of the saga — Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and Anakin Skywalker among them. Whether you're a lifelong fan or just discovering the Marvel run, R2-D2's sheer longevity and presence across the breadth of Star Wars comics makes him an essential part of any serious collection.
