“In Mortal Combat!”

From the cover of this July 1980 Marvel issue, Luke Skywalker stands his ground in an eerie, vine-draped landscape with R2-D2 at his side — while a red lightsaber blade thrusts toward him from an unseen opponent in the foreground, promising exactly what the tagline delivers: "In Mortal Combat!" Cover pencils by Carmine Infantino and inks by Bob Wiacek give the confrontation a dynamic, off-kilter tension that draws the eye straight into the danger. With Archie Goodwin scripting and Carmine Infantino on interior art, this is a fine example of Marvel's Star Wars run firing on all cylinders.
