About the series

DC’s The Vigilante (1983–1988) reimagined the classic Western hero as a modern-day, morally complex crimefighter—New York prosecutor Adrian Chase, who becomes a brutal, gun-wielding vigilante after personal tragedy. Running 50 issues, the series was shaped by writers Paul Kupperberg, Marv Wolfman, and Alan Moore, with art from Tod Smith, Chuck Patton, and Denys Cowan, and it introduced a darker, more psychological take on justice in the DC Universe. Alongside Chase, the cast included allies like Dave Winston and the super-powered Valentina Vostock (formerly Negative Woman), as well as the lethal Electrocutioner, grounding the book in a gritty, street-level world that predated the grim-and-gritty turn of the late ’80s.
