“Batman”

In "Batman," the 1987 issue of The Vigilante, Paul Kupperberg and Tod Smith deliver a tense, character-driven thriller as Harry brings Adrian to Gotham to track a Russian spy manipulating the mob. When Vigilante is ambushed by Batman—mistaking him for a killer—the Dark Knight reluctantly teams up with the vigilante, leading to a brutal showdown on the streets and a final, deadly confrontation by the river. Tod Smith’s dynamic art, from the gritty interiors to his striking cover, captures the mood of a city teetering between justice and chaos.

Harry has Adrian busted out of prison and brought to Gotham City to help him with the case of a Russian spy who is duping the mob into helping her sell government secrets. Vigilante is tailing the spy when Batman shows up and starts beating on him for being a dirty cop killer. Harvey intervenes and Batman begrudgingly agrees to work with Vigilante on the case. During the final shootout with Katia and the mob, Vigilante is hit by a bullet and falls into the river. When he doesn't resurface, everyone assumes that he has been killed.
