I Hate Fairyland
From 2015 to 2018, Skottie Young unleashed I Hate Fairyland, a gleefully violent and absurdist Image Comics series that follows Gertrude, a woman trapped in a candy-colored fantasy world for decades, who decides to fight her way out by any means necessary. Young, who wrote and drew the bulk of the run, was joined by artists Dean Rankine and Jeffrey "Chamba" Cruz to deliver a chaotic blend of Alice in Wonderland satire and ultraviolent comedy. The series became a cult hit for its unapologetically crude humor, subversive take on the magical-girl genre, and Young’s signature expressive, cartoonish art style. It matters as a standout example of modern indie comics that proved a single creator’s twisted vision could sustain a long-running, fan-favorite series.
