I Hate Fairyland was Skottie Young's first creator-owned series at Image Comics, having spent his earlier career primarily at Marvel on titles including Rocket Raccoon and his Eisner-nominated Oz adaptations with Eric Shanower. Young has said the concept had been gestating for four or five years before he launched it in October 2015, and that it began life as a planned 48-page Kickstarter project before evolving into an ongoing series. By the time issue #6 shipped on June 15, 2016, Young was simultaneously writing full scripts and drawing finished pages for the new arc while handling newborn parenting duties — a pressure he referenced in the issue's own afterword, which is itself an unusually frank piece of creator commentary embedded in the comic.
