Skottie Young's gleefully subversive series reaches its twelfth issue, and the cover says everything you need to know about its unique charm: a small, green-haired girl in a flowing pink robe clutches a blood-soaked katana while cradling a wide-eyed creature companion, the two of them surrounded by defeated enemies half-buried in a crimson-streaked snowfield as a tiny figure flees in the background. The contrast between the candy-colored title logo and the cheerfully grim carnage on display is precisely what makes I Hate Fairyland such a treat. Colorist Jean-François Beaulieu's vivid palette makes the whole beautiful mess absolutely pop.
