About this issue

The Gentleman Vagabond by Doctor Noel Dunbar This adventure serial opens with two horsemen—a refined Castilian gentleman named Don Quevedo and an American named James Endicott—riding through lawless Texas near San Antonio. They discover a ransom note demanding gold for the captive senorita Dolores, left by the "Foxes of the Frio" bandits at a lightning-struck tree. After depositing the gold, they rescue Dolores in a gunfight, though Endicott cowardly abandons her when more outlaws attack. Don Quevedo returns and rescues her, then retrieves the gold for himself, planning to win her affections. The narrative shifts to a coastal house near Matagorda Bay, where young Vivian Fairfax—revealed to be pursuing a mission of revenge against Endicott—encounters a mysterious young woman seated on shipwreck debris after a tropical storm. The OCR becomes unclear thereafter, but establishes dual storylines: one of outlaws and rescue in Texas ranches, another of mystery and personal vengeance unfolding by the sea.
