Rolf Gohs

Rolf Ernst Gohs was born on 26 October 1933 in Estonia and relocated to Sweden in 1946, where he would spend the bulk of a career spanning nearly seven decades. He died on 23 August 2020.

Gohs worked across multiple roles — artist, writer, colorist, inker, and letterer — accumulating credits on some 251 issues over a career that stretched from 1954 to 2022. Though he typically wrote his own material, it is his artwork that earned him the widest recognition. Early stories such as *Mannen från Claa* (The Man from Claa) and *Dödens Fågel* (The Bird of Death) were well received, establishing his reputation before he turned his attention to cover painting. Beginning in 1957, he contributed covers and interior art to the Swedish *Fantomen* comic, eventually becoming Sweden's most prominent cover artist — his paintings featuring well-known characters from across the international comics landscape, with much of his output finding publication beyond Sweden.

His most enduring original creation arrived in 1969: *Mystiska 2:an* (The Mysterious Two), following two young teenagers navigating Stockholm through stories that ranged from straight adventure to social realism. The series ran irregularly in comic books and album format for nearly twenty years before a controversial storyline in the 1980s — in which one of the boys developed feelings for an adult man — effectively ended both the feature and the short-lived magazine *Comet* that had been publishing it. Gohs later contributed a comics adaptation of the Children's Crusade directly to the Swedish Phantom comic.
